16th of August: 'Garland Coursing'

A race used to be run up a hill called Garland Pasture on this day at Askrigg in Yoredale, England.  The prize was a specially woven garland which I assume could be found at the top of the hill and the race was known as 'garland coursing'.

This event was sponsored by a woman who had been jilted centuries before.  A stipulation of her will was that the annual proceeds from her pasture should fund the race and it would serve as a perpetual reminder and punishment to the men of Wenslydale.

  1. Hello - I popped over from FL. Think your blog looks great and enjoyed having a peek at all the different kinds of art you're creating. I like all the little folklore snippets too - gosh that was some woman, who funded the garland race in the lovely Dales.

My one suggestion would be to create a new header for your blog. When I clicked on your blog the first image of the trees was very large and you don't see there is text until you scroll down a bit. If you don't know how to do that I don't mind helping you with it.

  4. Popping on over from FL class.I think your blog is quite sweet. Your artwork is beautiful. I would change the size of your banner artwork which is a gorgeous photo. I would consider taking a snippet of some of your favorite photos and creating a montage style banner which offers your readers an immediate view of your work. Use the current photo as the center and build around it. I would also put your profile info up at the top of one of the columns so it's the first thing visitors can find. It's your introduction and lets us know about you as soon as we visit your blog. Your artwork is beautiful so we want to know the gifted artist/photographer behind those amazing photos we are seeing.

  7. Thanks to the 'Flying Lessons' (Kelly Rae Roberts e-course)girls for the blog suggestions. I have made a few changes but my computer is now doing strange things and crashing a lot so I am going to leave it at that for now.
